In late 2018 the Rotary Clubs of Duncan, Duncan Daybreak, Ladysmith, Chemainus and South Cowichan teamed up to raise the money to build the Cowichan Hospice House Gardens. Led by AG Gay Wise and president Gerry Giles of the Rotary Club  of South Cowichan, they are now more than a third of the way towards the $325,000.00 in cash and in kind. The Clubs are working hard to have the funds in place when the construction on the main buildings are complete. Giles said, “As a long-time resident of the Cowichan Valley, I am delighted to see a Hospice House for the Cowichan Valley move forward and I am thrilled to see the five Rotary Clubs in the Cowichan Valley partner in building the Rotary Gardens at Cowichan Hospice House.”

Funds have been raised through revolving Garage Sales, Beer and Burger Nights, Music Events, a huge Barn Dance and events hosted by the Valley’s Kitchen Sisters. Several other events are planned including an “Artists for Hospice” show and gala opening in February at the Ladysmith Art Gallery.

The Gardens were designed by LEEDS Award winning LADR Landscape Architects and the landscaping will be overseen by Living Stones Landscaping. The Sod turning event was held on July 18 and construction is well under way on the site at 250 Cairnsmore Street in Duncan. The sod turning event was preceded by prayers, singing and dancing by local Cowichan First Nations and speeches by elders. Construction is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2020.
